Synopsis
Dawson and Joey are watching ET and discussing Spielberg's Peter Pan syndrome. They
see Dawson's mom on TV. Joey decides to leave, and Dawson asks why. "Things change,
Dawson, evolve," she says, "Sleeping in the same bed was fine when we were kids, but we're
fifteen now. We start high school Monday, and I have breasts. I just think our emerging
hormones are destined to alter our relationship." "Your raging hormones aren't developing a
thing for me, are they?" Dawson asks. "It doesn't apply to us, we defy it." he calls her
Josephine and they begin to wrestle on the bed. "We're friends okay," Dawson says, "No
matter how much body hair we acquire, deal?" "Deal." answers Joey. She rolls over, her back
to Dawson, and begins to take all the covers. Dawson looks over towards her. "Why'd you have
to bring this up, anyway?"
Joey, Dawson and Pacey are shooting Dawson's movie on the pier, and Pacey leaps out
of the water to pull Joey in. Dawson complains about not making the festival, but is distracted
as a cab pulls up and Jen walks out. Pacey and Dawson immediately go to meet her, leaving
Joey behind. Dawson remembers her as the grand daughter from New York. "You look
different," he says. "Puberty," Joey says. Jen explains her grandfather's aorta collapsed and
her parents sent her to help. She leaves, and Joey mocks Dawson's obvious appreciation of
her.
Dawson and Pacey return to Dawson's house to find Mitch and Gail kissing passionately
on the coffee table. Dawson is disgusted but Pacey seems to be enjoying himself.
Joey rows home and is greeted by Bodie, who forces her to try his latest culinary
creation. Her sister chides her about borrowing her clothes.
Dawson and Pacey are working at the video store and Pacey is mocking Dawson's
parents obvious sex life as well as mocking the bosses rather stupid daughter, who takes pride
in proclaiming him a nobody. Pacey is distracted as Tamara walks in and approaches the
counter. "Have some respect man," Dawson says, "She could be somebody's mother." Pacey
gives her a lot of attention as he gets her membership ready, and she seems to be flirting
back, asking for help finding movies such as The Graduate. She leaves, with a last look at
Pacey. "Wipe the drool off your face," Dawson says.
Dawson returns home and sees Jen sitting on the pier. He sits with her, asking about her
grandfather. Jen explains her Grandmother's religious ways and looks at the movies Dawson
brought with him: Creature From The Black Lagoon, Humanoids From the Deep, and Swamp
Thing. Explains that he's making a movie. "Kinda young to be so ambitious," she says.
"Fifteen," Dawson replies, "Spielberg started on eight millimeter when he was thirteen." "Why
movies," Jen asks, "What's the attraction?" "I reject reality." answers Dawson quickly. He asks
her up to his room to see his studio, where he shows her his posters, arranged in receding box
office order. "I believe that all the mysteries of the universe, all the answers to life's questions,
can be found in a Spielberg film," he says. "Have you considered a twelve step program?" Jen
asks.
Joey arrives outside the house and begins to climb the ladder to Dawson's window when
she hears Jen's voice, she and Dawson are discussing the forthcoming film competition. Jen's
grandmother calls her home and she leaves, Joey ducking out of view. Once she's gone Joey
enters. Dawson shows her a tape of his mother's newscast. "Do you think my mother's
sleeping with her co-anchor?" he asks, using the way she says "back to you Bob," as proof.
"You're just looking for conflict," Joey says. "Accept your perfect life, Dawson."
Jen enters her grandfather's room, where he lays asleep. She sits beside him and gently
whispers hello. She is examining the scar on his chest when Mrs. Lindley enters and calls her
down to breakfast. Jen asks her grandmother to tell her about Dawson. "That boy is trouble,"
Mrs. Lindley answers. "What about the girl who lives down the creek," Jen continues, "Joey."
"That girl from down the creek has been crawling in the bedroom window of the boy next door
for the past ten years. Neither goes to church. I believe they're what you call the wrong
element," her grandmother explains. Jen starts to eat without praying, and the two argue about
her lack of faith. "I'm an atheist," Jen tells her.
At school that day, Jen is approached by a representative of the "popular crowd," who
asks if she likes to party. Jen explains that she does like to have fun, but substance free. Her
membership is no longer under consideration, and the girl leaves. Dawson finds her and they
compare schedules.
In English class, Pacey realizes that Tamara is his English teacher, much to his shock.
Jen and Joey have Biology class together, which makes Jen quite happy but Joey less
so.
Dawson goes to the film class and complains that he was denied the class in his
schedule. The teacher explains that sophomores aren't allowed in the class, and Dawson
proceeds to beg, citing his life's ambition is to be a film maker. He asks the teacher to overrule
in his favor, but the teacher declines, upsetting Dawson visibly.
In the halls, Jen confronts Joey. "Are you and Dawson a... thing?" she asks. "We're just
friends," Joey answers. Jen tells her what her grandmother said about her, and Joey says she's
mostly correct. "Pick a topic," she says, "There's my Dad the imprisoned convict, or my sister,
impregnated by her black boyfriend." She tells Jen her mother died of cancer. "He likes you
you know," Joey says bluntly. "Who?" Jen asks. "Dawson," Joey replies, "Don't abuse his
feelings."
In the cafeteria, Dawson flirts with Jen, making up stories about the passersby. He asks
her to take a look at his script, he's "having a climax issue."
Pacey approaches Tamara after class and flirts with her, bringing up The Summer of 42
and offering to reserve it for her. She's going to see a movie instead and tells Pacey about it. "I
guess I'll check it out then," he says. He meets Dawson in the hallway and tells him to keep
his schedule open so they can go to the movies and "stalk a faculty member. "Dawson
declines. "Hang on," Pacey says, "I actually have a chance to lose my virginity in a high level
fantasy fashion." Go home," Dawson says, "Walk your dog, it's not going to happen." "You can
invite Miss Teen New York," Pacey adds. Dawson looks up to see Jen being hit on by a large
football player. Pacey tells him to go talk to her, and pushes him away.
Dawson tells Jen about the guy she was talking to, and asks her to the movie that night.
After school, he asks Joey to go, so Jen won't feel uncomfortable. She reluctantly agrees. "I
know you're worried about our relationship," Dawson says, "But nothing has to change. We
can talk about anything." He rides off.
Jen jokes with her grandmother about her date with Dawson and she says she can go as
long as she comes to church Sunday morning. "I have my beliefs," Jen says, "Please respect
them." "I know what happened in New York," Mrs. Lindley answers, "Church will do you good."
Jen is upset. "Church isn't the answer," she says, "not for me." Jen says she'll go to church
when her grandmother says "penis." Mrs. Lindley is visibly shocked as Jen leaves.
Dawson starts a conversation with his father about sex before he leaves, asking why
everyone's so worked up about it. "If sex is so important," he asks, "Then how come Spielberg
has never had a sex scene in one of his movies?" He is interrupted by the doorbell.
Joey leaves the house and is stopped by her sister, who puts some lipstick on her and
tells her to have fun.
As the group walks to the movie, Joey is continually rude to Jen. Jen complements her
lipstick and asks her the shade, Joey responds with "I love your hair color, what number is
that?" Dawson seems confused by her attitude, but she keeps it up, asking about Jen's
virginity. Jen claims she's a virgin. "What is up with you?" Dawson asks as they enter the
theater.
They find seats and Pacey begins looking for Tamara. She enters and sits down, he goes
to see her. Joey sits next to Jen and rolls her eyes repeatedly, especially when she notices
Dawson attempt to hold Jen's hand. He does, and Joey starts in on Jen again, asking how
important size is to her. Dawson pulls her outside, threatening death.
Pacey sits next to Tamara, and she is surprised to see him. He offers to sit with her and
she tells him he doesn't understand. The film teacher arrives and Pacey realizes he's here with
her. He offers to help him find his seat, and Pacey pushes him away, forcing him to spill his
popcorn on a rather large man behind him, who then stands and punches Pacey in the face.
In the lobby, Dawson is very angry with Joey. "What is your problem?" He asks. "My
problem," Joey replies, "Is that ever since little miss highlights showed up you haven't said one
word to me." "I like her okay?" Dawson yells, "Why can't you see that?" "Nothing penetrates
with you Dawson," Joey answers, "You're so far removed from reality you can't even see what's
right in front of your face. Your life is a friggin' fairy tale an you don't even know it. You just want
conflict for that script you're writing. Grow up." She leaves.
Dawson walks Jen home, and she tells him he shouldn't walk her to the door, "with
Grams ready to pounce." He apologizes for Joey's behavior and there's an awkward moment as
Dawson is obviously thinking about kissing her. The light comes on and Jen turns to go. "I'm
just going to pretend we kissed, okay?" she says, and goes inside.
Pacey is walking home and sees Tamara standing at the side of the pier. She wants to
clear up the misunderstanding and apologize, and says she was just renting a movie, not
flirting with him. "The truth is," Pacey says, "you're a well put-together knockout of a woman
who's feeling a little insincere about hitting forty. So when a young virile boy such as myself
flirts with you you enjoy it. You fantasize about what it would be like to be with that young boy.
Well, you blew it lady, I'm the best sex you'll never have." "You're not a boy," she says, and
kisses him. She then breaks the kiss, apologizes, and runs off.
Dawson returns home and finds Joey in his closet. "What is going on between us?" he
asks. "I have no idea," she says. He apologizes for being insensitive. "I don't want to lose you
Joey, what we have is the only thing that makes sense to me. When I saw you at the movie
theater with that lipstick on, I remember thinking how pretty you looked." Joey smiles. "But
that was it," he continues "it didn't go any further than that." Joey explains that she didn't want
to be the one holding his hand at the movies, but she didn't want it to be Jen either. "So where
does that leave us?" Dawson asks. "We're growing up," Joey answers, "even Spielberg outgrew
his Peter Pan syndrome." She starts to leave and Dawson stops her "I can't sleep over
anymore," she says, "And we can't talk about the things we used to. "That's not true," Dawson
says, "I can tell you anything." "How often do you walk your dog?" Joey asks. After a period of
silence, Dawson tells her to go. She leaves, and as she gets into her boat and is about to leave
Dawson bangs his head against the wall and goes to the window. "Joey!" He shouts, "Usually
in the morning, to Katie Couric!" She laughs to herself and Dawson smiles as she rows away.
Dawson goes back into his room and Joey sees his mother getting out of Bob's car, kissing
him goodbye.

Synopsis
Joey and Dawson are watching Dawson's video footage shot earlier in the day, in which
Joey refuses to kiss Pacey. Dawson is sculpting a dummy head for Joey's decapitation scene,
and trying to talk her into it. They talk about how Dawson hasn't kissed Jen yet. "Jen and I will
definitely kiss," h e says, "Don't you worry." He tells Joey she has kissing lips, and tells her
she could just close her eyes and think of someone else. She sits back, smiling, and it's
obvious who she's thinking about.
In school the next day, an announcement comes over the loudspeaker about the
upcoming dance as Dawson goes back to the teacher of film class. He has study hall fifth
period, and wants to sit in on film class instead. The teacher agrees, as long as Dawson sits in
the back and doesn't contribute. Dawson leaves, quite happy.
Pacey is waiting for Tamara at her desk, and he asks her to talk. "We have nothing to
discuss," she says. "We could start with the kiss if you'd like," he says. She denies it ever
happened and tells him to leave. The bell rings. "There was no kiss," she says, and Pacey
leaves.
Dawson tells everyone at lunch that they'll have to shoot all weekend to make the
deadline, and Joey is still worries about the kiss. Dawson has a revelation: he'll kill off Joey and
replace her with Jen. "Like Janet Leigh in psycho," he observes. "Like Drew Barrymore in
Scream," Pacey chimes in. "Oh," Joey says, "A rip off of a rip off."
In English, Tamara is discussing Wuthering Heights and how the two main characters
were not meant to be together and that the "whole thing's wrong, never should have happened."
Pacey listens intently.
In film class, the class discusses the film they're doing, a football film directed by Cliff
called "Helmets of Glory."
Later, Dawson complains to Joey about Cliff, his film, and the fact that they're entering it
into he same festival his film will be in. They see Cliff flirting with Jen in the hall, and she flirts
back, then walks by the two of them. "I told you Dawson," Joey says, "they move fast in New
York."
Dawson is looking for his camcorder and goes to his dad to ask for help. After a brief talk,
Dawson asks for some fatherly advice, although he "Clearly doesn't condone" his parents sex
life. He wants help with the "mechanics of kissing." Mitch tells Dawson about the first time he
kissed Gail, when she asked for some chapstick. Joey enters from upstairs, and stands at the
top of the stairs listening to them talk about kissing and romance. "It's all about romance,"
Mitch explains. He then holds up Dawson's dummy Joey head and tells him to try it out.
Reluctantly, Dawson closes his eyes and gently kisses the dummy. At the top of the stairs,
Joey closes her eyes as well, picturing herself in the dummy's place. "Forget this ever
happened." Dawson says.
Joey follows the phone cord to the closet door and hears Gail talking to Bob, making
kissing noises into the phone. "What are you doing?" Gail asks. After some small talk, Joey is
about to leave. "Mrs. Leery," she says, "I know." Gail is obviously concerned.
In the film, Joey's character fights Pacey off before being decapitated. Joey walks off to
clean up and Jen follows to help her out, despite Joey's objections. Joey removes her shirt.
"You have nice breasts," Jen says "Don't take that the wrong way, I'm completely hetero, just a
girl to girl thing." They talk about insecurities and appearances, Joey tells Jen she doesn't look
like a duck. "That's the nicest thing you've said to me since me met."
Pacey kisses Jen a little too passionately on camera, and Dawson gets angry, cutting the
kiss from the film. Pacey wants to leave, he has plans tonight. "It just so happens the woman
of my dreams is at the school dance tonight, and I plan on going," he says. "Lucky her," Joey
replies.
Dawson asks Jen to watch movies with him instead of going to the dance, but she tells
him she's going with Cliff, but it's not a date. "That's the definition of a date." Dawson replies.
She tells him to stop by, and leaves.
Dawson is complaining to Joey about Cliff and Jen going to the dance together. Joey
backs him up. "Completely thoughtless," she says. Dawson imagines what they're doing right
now, slow dancing to a cheesy eighties song and maybe even kissing. "You're so dramatic,"
Joey observes. "What did he do that I didn't do?" Dawson asks. "He asked her out," Joey
says. Dawson decides to go to the dance and take control, Joey goes with him because she's
"Not above witnessing his hormonal suicide."
Joey goes downstairs to wait for Dawson and sees Gail and Mitch kissing. Gail tells Mitch
she'll be "out late" tonight. Gail runs into Joey in the hallway. "We have to talk" she says. Joey
tells Gail about how her mother's life was ruined by her father's infidelity. "Do you know your
reasons for doing what you're doing?" she says, "That can't possibly outweigh the ever lasting
damage you're doing." Gail is worried. "Does Dawson know?" she asks. Dawson comes
downstairs. "Know what?" he asks. "About the dance," Joey tells him, and the two leave for the
school.
At the dance, Cliff is flirting with Jen, and she pulls him onto the dance floor. Pacey arrives
and finds Tamara and approaches her, telling her he's "A thesaurus of emotion," and asks her
to dance. "It's not a good idea, Pacey," she tells him, and leaves. Joey and Dawson enter and
see Jen and Cliff dancing. "what exactly is your plan," Joey asks. "I didn't exactly get that far,"
he says. He pulls Joey onto the dance floor and a slow song comes on. They hold each other,
dancing closely, and Joey is obviously happier about this than Dawson. They "bump into" Jen
and Cliff and Dawson has an awkward conversation about movies with Cliff.
Later, Dawson sees Jen leaving the room and goes after her. She asks where he' s been.
"I was hoping we could dance," she says. "What about Cliff?" Dawson asks, "He might get
upset, you being his date and all." Jen is upset. "Forget I asked," she says, and flees to the
bathroom.
Joey wants to leave but Dawson wants to stay, he's "enjoying his misery." He tells Joey
how he feels like he's known Jen his whole life. "Just like you," he says. Joey rolls her eyes.
She reminds him that in his film the hero doesn't get the girl, he dies. "Rest in peace Dawson,
it was nice knowing you," she says, and leaves.
Dawson decides it's "time for a rewrite," and tries to cut in on Cliff and Jen. He makes a
complete ass of himself, and Cliff tells him to leave. They start fighting, and Jen decides she
should be the one to leave.
Dawson, Jen and Pacey are walking home. "This could be the single most humiliating
night of my life," Dawson observes. Pacey tells Dawson he was busy and asks who the
mystery woman is. "At the moment," Pacey says, "The mystery woman is still a mystery to
me." He walks off, leaving Dawson and Joey to walk alone.
Gail returns home, and Mitch asks if she remembers their first kiss. She tells him she
does, but can't seem to come up with the details. Mitch is upset, but behind his back she puts
some chapstick on, and kisses him. The kiss continues, but Gail is obviously having second
thoughts.
Pacey finds Tamara on the pier. "I can't believe this is happening," he says. "I feel this
strange familiarity creeping over me." She apologizes for her behavior. "This is without question
the most absurd thing I've ever done," she says. "What I did was deadly wrong." She tries to
explain and apologize, hoping she hasn't left any permanent scars. "Where do you get off
taking all the responsibility for this," Pacey asks, "My lips kissed back. I kissed you back. And
I don't regret that at all, and you shouldn't either." She tells him this can't happen again, their
relationship must remain teacher-student. "This is so unfair," he says, "I'm not good with girls,
and I finally meet someone..." She tells him that will change and says goodnight. She starts to
walk away, but turns back, and they kiss again.
Dawson asks Joey what they learned from this "90210 night." he decides he's blown it
with Jen, it's over, and Joey seems very happy about this, now that she has him to herself.
They flirt innocently. "I can't understand how someone so self aware can be utterly clueless,"
Joey says. Dawson sees Jen standing by the water. "Wish me luck," Dawson says, and
leaves Joey alone. "I hope you get your kiss," she says.
"I don't know what to say," Dawson starts off. Jen tells him how angry she is. "What do
you want from me?" she asks. "I want to know what's going on between us," Dawson says,
apologizing for tonight. "I got scared I was becoming the friend," he says. "I don't want that to
be the case. It's too complicated." Dawson asks for a kiss. "In New York I was moving fast, so
fast I kept stumbling and falling," she tells him, "Here I feel like I'm walking at a steady pace
and if I kiss you my knees may buckle, and I may stumble, and I don't know if I can handle it
right now." She asks him to dance. "I've wanted to dance with you all night," she reveals. They
hold each other, and move gently to music from a nearby boat. Joey watches from the street,
her face drained of emotion.
